in reality, however, nothing is rarer than a work of art so overflowing with life that it bleeds wherever it is pricked. loosely constructed works consisting of more or less independent parts occur, of course, much more frequently than those made all of a piece, but in relatively few does the ‘blood flow’ everywhere; few abound with the same energy and vitality at every point. but that is how the great works of mannerism are made.
